As We Stumble Along is the show-stopping number performed by The Drowsy Chaperone. As the narrator of the show points out, it is basically a rousing anthem to alcoholism.
For those of you who haven’t seen The Drowsy Chaperone, Eileen played the title character, a Grande Dame of the Stage who specializes in “rousing anthems” and isn’t above upstaging the occasional co-star diva. In this show-within-a-show, “Drowsy” has a penchant for champagne and is doing a particularly poor job of chaperoning the showgirl-bride-to-be, Janet Van De Graaff.
When Janet asks her Chaperone for her advice on love, “D-Chaps” (as we fondly called her) performs this huge, inspirational, key-changing solo, utterly devoid of any actual advice….
Critics offered much praise for this performance, calling it “show-stopping”, “sultry” and “powerful”. Eileen blushes with joy, gratitude and a really humble fist pump.
