I was perusing the audition notices when I saw it… Becoming Cuba…a new play debuting in San Diego.
My heart leapt a little & I found myself reading everything I could find about the theatre and the playwright.
I would learn that the author, Melinda Lopez, is an award-winning writer who just won a coveted residency through the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. And that she is smart, awesome & inspiring.
When we had the chance to meet over coffee (Cuban, of course) she thought I would make a great Adela, the protagonist of Becoming Cuba. What an honor!
Commissioned by North Coast Repertory Theatre, this World Premiere drama set in 1890s Cuba introduces a family of siblings coping with each other and the upheaval in their country and their lives as Cuba struggles for independence.
Playwright Melinda Lopez knowledge of the era opens the door to a story of loyalty and family, fighting for a cause, and fighting to find happiness…set against the bloody backdrop of the birth of a nation as Cuba fights to free itself from Spanish rule. What becomes of this family when war forces them to choose who they are and what they truly stand for…and will they even survive the violent sweep of history?
The Birth of a Nation…
…and the rebirth of a woman are at the heart of BECOMING CUBA, the compelling new drama by award-winning playwright Melinda Lopez.
1890s Cuba is locked in a bloody struggle for independence from Spain, while Adela & her siblings do battle over the meaning of love and loyalty and what will become of them when war forces all of them to choose sides…
